1 The sun can be a cheap, clean, effective, source of power
(2) solar energy doesn't cause.pollution

Are you looking for a cheap. clean, effective source of power that doesn't cause pollution or waste natural resources? Look no further than solar energy from the sun. At present, most of our electricity comes from the use of coal, gas, oil, or nuclear power. This power could be provided by the sun. One percent of the solar energy that reaches the Earth is enough to provide power for the total pollution. Many countries are already using solar energy. Solar panels are placed on the roof of a house and the Sun's energy is used o heat water. The energy can be stored for a number of days, so on cloudy days you can use solar energy. Sweden has an advanced solar energy program. There, all buildings will be heated by solar energy and cars will use solar energy instead of gas by the year 2015.
True or False sentence:
1....................Solar energy can be cheap and clean.
2....................Most of our electricity now comes from nuclear power.
3....................the solar energy that gets to the Earth cannot provide enough power for the world's population.
4....................Solar energy can be used on cloudy days.
5....................All buildings in Sweden will be heated by solar energy in 2050.

a. Solar energy is a cheap, clean, effective source of power.
b. We have used less fuels nowaday.
c. Solar energy will provide for a very long time.
d. Solar energy can be used to cook food..
Solar energy is a long lasting source of energy which can be used almost anywhere. To generate solar energy, we only need solar cells and the sun. Solar cells can easily be installed on house roofs, so nonew space is needed and each user can quietly generate their own energy. Compared to other renewable sources, they also possess many advantages: wind and water power relies on turbines which are noisy, expensive and easy to break down. Solar cells are totally silent and non-polluting. As they have no moving parts, they require little maintenance and have a long lifetime.
However, solar energy also has some disadvantages. We can only generate solar energy during daytime because the system depends on sunlight. Besides, solar cellsrequire large area to work effectively. The main disadvantage of solar energy is that it costs about twice as much as traditional sources such as coal, oil and gas. This is because solar cells are expensive. Scientists are hoping that the costs of solar cells will reduce as more and more people see the advantages of this environmentally friendly source of energy.

A. Advantages and disadvantages of solar energy.
B. Solar energy as an alternative for fossil fuels.
C. Solar energy’s advantage over other sources of energy.
D. The cost of solar energy.
2. What does the word “they” refer to?
A. solar cells B. solar energy users
C. other renewable resources D. advantages
3. Which of the following is the advantage of solar cells?

Almost all our energy comes from oil, coal and natural gas. We call them fossil fuels. The earth’s
fossil fuels are running out. What would happen if there were no oil, coal and gas on earth?
Scientists are trying to find and use other alternative sources of energy. We can use energy
from the sun, the wind and the water.
Solar energy is unlimited. It supplies all the energy used to grow plants, to evaporate water for
rain, and to maintain the temperature of the planet. All are necessary for human life. If we’re able to
collect solar energy, we’ll be sure to make good use of this abundant source of power.
Another source of energy from nature is the wind. Wind power is clean and plentiful. Energy
from the wind has been used for centuries to move ships, grind grain, pump water and do other kinds
of work. In more recent time, wind power has been used to generate electricity.
Water can also provide power. For a long time, people have used water to power machines.
Some early uses of water power were to mill grain, saw wood and power machinery for the textile
industry. Today water power is mostly used to generate electricity.
11. We are asking the question “What would happen if there were no oil, coal and gas on earth?” because ___.
A. we are now depending so much on fossil fuels.
B. we are looking forward to seeing great changes.
C. we are looking for other alternative sources of energy.
D. other sources of energy can come from the sun, the wind and the water.
12. Which of the following can NOT be used as alternative sources of energy?
A. coal/gas B. the sun/the water

United Nations officials say the use of energy from sun could help agricultural areas in developing countries. They say that the use of solar technology could greatly improve the lives of millions of people. Solar technology systems use energy from the sun to make electric power. Solar energy now is used mainly in homes. It supplies power for electric lighting, radios and TV. It is also used to heat water. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization says now is the time to develop other uses for solar energy. Nowadays almost two thousand million people in developing countries still have no electric power. In general, most poor farmers will not be able to purchase solar power systems. However, solar energy can provide some important social services for people in developing countries. They include water supply systems and cooling devices to store medicines.
