If you struggle with reading, then watching TV can certainly seem a lot easier. It certainly feels like a passive activity, requiring little effort from us but to relax. (But what benefits are you missing out on by not reading)? And what specifically are the benefits of reading compared to watching television or movies?
Some television programs do provide great educational input. We love National Geographic as much as the next person. But more often a TV show requires little to no input or thinking by the viewer. We admit it; this is one of the attractions of television on occasion. Trouble is, a Japanese study in 2013 found
watching TV actually lowered the IQ of children. In contrast, a recent study by Emory University found reading novels created heightened connectivity in the brain for up to five days after reading. Connectivity in the brain translates to getting smarter over time. So reading can make you smarter.
Reading has been shown to reduce stress in just six minutes! Research shows reading works faster and better than listening to music, drinking coffee or even taking a walk. TV might feel like it relaxes your body, but another study showed television can amplify stress because we frequently feel guilty or like a failure afterwards.
Reading is not generally seen as a social activity. Yet reading can have great impact on how we react in social situations. Reading develops better verbal and empathy skills. Better empathy, verbal skills, and knowledge make readers more interesting and attractive people. Watching TV is a basically antisocial experience. Especially for young children compared to being read a story by a parent or grandparent. Reading aloud together is an interactive process especially important for the development of young children.

We are in the middle of a worldwide change in cultures – a transformation of entertainment, business and politics. Popular culture has crossed borders in ways we have never seen before. According to social scientists, our world is (shrinking). In Japan, people have become fanatics of flamenco and there
are hundreds of dance schools around the country. In the last few years, dozens of top Spanish flamenco artists have given performances there. It’s a huge and growing market. Meanwhile, in Denmark people have discovered a new interest in Italian food, and pasta imports have grown fivefold over the last decade. And the classic American blonde Barbie doll now comes in about 30 national varieties, including new additions this year of Austrian and Moroccan.
How do people feel about globalisation? It depends to a large extent on where they live and how much money they’ve got. However, globalisation, as one report has stated, ‘is a reality, not a choice’. Humans have always developed commercial and cultural connections, but these days computers, the Internet, mobile phones, cable TV and cheaper air transport have accelerated and complicated these connections. Nevertheless, the basic dynamic is the same: Goods move. People move. Ideas move. And cultures change. The difference now is the speed and extent of these changes. Television had 50 million users after thirteen years; the Internet had (the same number) after only five years. But now that more than one fifth of all the people in the world speak at least some English, critics of globalisation say that we are one big ‘McWorld’.

To some extent we know that the people we work, live or spend time with are not always being honest with us. They can't always be having a good day, be excited about your success or be completely happy for a colleague who's been promoted instead of them. But what about when deception isn't just about mood, but is actually an important part when interacting with other people?
Generally speaking, deception is, understandably, viewed negatively - if someone has to resort to lying, they're probably not very good at their job or not a very nice person. In the workplace, deceit can toxic in an environment that values trust and teamwork and can damage productivity as a result. However, deception is absolutely necessary in many cases.
In some profession, people are expected to lie (take private investigators, for example). Deception can also be strategic in companies, such as when a call centre instructs employees to pretend that they've located in a different country due to customer biases. And keep in mind that even police officers have to make use of deception to arrest criminals in many cases. Additionally, customer
service roles, and especially the kinds of emotional labour frequently carried out by women, alsotypically call for workers to conceal their true feelings. Do you really want flight attendants to tell you that you should be unnerved and should not remain calm when the plane is shaking, or psychiatrists to tell you that they do not have any sympathy for you at all when listening to your mental problems?
Sometimes, lying is even seen as the more ethical option. A prime example of this is when doctors lie to their patients about their health conditions, obviously not to raise false hopes but simply to cheer them up during treatment. A harmless lie can also spare people from unnecessary hurt, and people
who tell it should be praised for their kindness and the good outcome that usually comes from not making a potentially hurtful comment. The most fundamental thing in pro-social lying, or the kind of dishonesty intended to help another person is that (it) is not about gaining an unfair advantage or otherwise being self-serving, but about delivering little and harmless lies out of care or compassion. Therefore, it's important to asks ourselves when it is and isn't appropriate to deliver the hard, honest truth, when it's best to step back and offer a more delicate response. More often than not, it’s about striking a balance between the two.
