1. Almost và nearly thường được dùng trong những câu khẳng định và có thể thay thế cho nhau.

- There were almost / nearly five thousand people at the meeting

(Có gần 5,000 người dự mít tinh.)

- He nearly / almost died from a drug overdose.

(Anh ấy suýt chết vì dùng thuốc quá liều.)

Về ngữ nghĩa, chúng có hơi khác nhau. Almost tương tự nghĩa với well-nigh, tức “rất gần” (very nearly); trong khi nearly ám chỉ đến một mức độ hoặc khoảng cách lớn hơn almost. Hãy so sánh :

- It’s nearly two o’clock.

(Gần 2 giờ rồi – Có thể là khoảng 1g45)

- It’s almost two o’clock.

(Gần 2 giờ rồi – Có thể là khoảng 1g57)

Lưu ý :

Khi dùng với những cụm từ chỉ thời gian, cần nhớ là almost và nearly phải được đặt sau “to be” như trên. Chẳng hạn, chúng ta không nói “She arrived at almost two o’clock”, mà nên nói “It was almost/nearly two o’clock when she arrived.”

2. Trong các câu phủ định, ta khọng dùng nearly mà có thể dùng almost. Tuy nhiên, người ta thường thay thế almost bằng hardly hoặc scarcely.

- She sang so quietly that I could hardly hear her.

(Cô ấy hát khẽ đến nỗi tôi khó có thể nghe được.)

Trong trường hợp này ta không nói “… I almost couldn’t hear her.”

3. Về vị trí trong câu, khi làm bổ ngữ, almost và nearly thường đứng trước động từ, tính từ, danh từ hay trạng từ khác. Trong trường hợp dùng với động từ, nếu có trợ động từ (auxiliary verb), ta đặt almost hay nearly sau trợ động từ đó.

- I’ve almost / nearly finished.

(Tôi gần như đã hoàn tất.)

Nếu có nhiều hơn một trợ động từ, thì vị trí của almost hay nearly là sau trợ động từ thứ nhất.

- He has nearly/almost been drowned in it four times.

(Anh ấy gần như chết chìm trong đó 4 lần.)

4. Những cách dùng khác biệt giữa almost và nearly.

Ta không dùng nearly trước các trạng từ tận cùng bằng –ly mà thay bằng almost.

- Her supervisor is almost certainly there.

(Người giám sát của cô ấy hầu như chắc chắn ở đó.)

Có thể dùng almost trước những từ phủ định như never, no-one, no, none, nothing, nowhere nhưng không thể dùng nearly trước các từ này. Ngược lại, ta có thể dùng nearly sau “not” để nhấn mạnh đến một lời nói phủ định.

- This classroom is not nearly big enough.

(Lớp học này hầu như không đủ lớn.)

Almost không được dùng theo sau “not” như thế này.

Pretty, so và very có thể dùng với nearly nhưng không đi cùng với almost.

Ta thường dùng almost hơn là nearly trước everybody, everyone, everything, everywhere, anybody, anyone, anything và anywhere.

- He’s been almost everywhere.

(Anh ta hầu như có mặt ở mọi nơi.)

- Almost anybody can do this job.

(Hầu như ai cũng có thể làm việc này.)

Ta dùng almost – chứ không dùng nearly – để diễn tả một sự “giống như thế nhưng không đích xác là thế” (similar to, but not exactly the same), hay để diễn tả một ý ít xác quyết một chút (less definite).

- It made me feel almost like an actor.
