Elizabeth Blackwell was born in England in 1821, and immigrated to New York city when she was ten years old. One day she decided that she wanted to become a doctor. That was nearly impossible for a woman in the middle of the nineteenth century. After writing many letters seeking admission to the medical schools, she was finally accepted by a doctor in Philadelphia. So determined was she that she taught school and gave music lessons to earn money for her tuition. In 1849, after graduation from medical school, she decided to further her education in Paris. She wanted to be a surgeon, but a serious eye infection forced her to abandon the idea. Upon returning to the United State, she found it difficult to start her own practice because she was a woman. REPORT ON SCHOOL LIBRARY

As instructed, I made a study of the present condition of our school library by visiting it every day this week. I had talks with many students and also questioned the prefects. I spoke to the members of the staff. I saw the librarian and had a long discussion. I have listed down below the areas which need a thorough revamping.

Service: This is not up to the standard. There is insufficient staff to attend to the pupils’ need. The librarian has agreed to my suggestion to engage extra hands if the management agrees.

Reading room: It is not spacious enough to accommodate the present student population. Although the room is tidy, the heat is intolerable. It would be helpful if we could obtain a bigger hall with more tables, chairs and fans to put in.

Books: In an ideal educational system, the school library should be the centre of academic life. It should be well provided with sufficient books, journals, magazines and newspaper. Although we have a good selection of books, we still don’t have many good reference books. Students made a number of requests for them.

Discipline: I am really glad to note that the discipline is good and maintained at all times. The librarian and the class prefects deserve to be praised for their efficient and sincere word.
