Nghĩa của các từ trông trong bài ca dao 

Cũng là chữ trông nhưng ở đây có ý nghĩa và sắc thái không giống nhau. Năm chữ trông ở trước: trông trời, trông đất, trông mây, trông mưa, trông gió có nghĩa là quan sát, theo dõi, trông nhìn trời, đất, lúa má ruộng đồng, sự biến đổi của thời tiết để chủ động tát nước chống hạn, tháo nước chống úng, bón phân, bắt sâu, làm cỏ... Chữ trông ở cuối câu thứ tư: trông ngày, trông đêm  mang hàm nghĩa là phấp phỏng lo lắng, đợi chờ, trông mong, hy vọng. Nỗi lòng ấy diễn ra triền miên, liên tục suốt ngày đêm. Nhà nông xưa, nay có biết bao nỗi lo lắng, bao điều ngóng trông...

Hai câu cuối là lời cầu mong rất chân thành, thánh thiện. Chữ trông nói lên nỗi cầu mong, niềm hy vọng:

                                                                          Trời êm bể lặng, mới yên tấm lòng.

Thành ngữ chân cứng đá mềm nói lên sức khỏe, sự dẻo dai chiến thắng mọi thử thách khó khàn, nguy hiểm. Trời êm bể lặng cũng là một thành ngữ, trong văn cảnh này có hai ý nghĩa: trông mong mưa thuận gió hoà, cầu mong được sống bình yên, tránh được mọi thiên tai, địch hoạ. Trong xã hội cũ, nhất là dưới thời phong kiến, mất mùa, dịch bệnh, loạn lạc, hạn hán, bão lũ xảy ra thường xuyên, qua đó, ta càng thấy sự cầu mong, hi vọng của người phụ nữ nông dân trong bài ca dao rất đáng được cảm thông và trân trọng. Tấm lòng đôn hậu, khát vọng mùa màng bội thu, sức khỏe dồi dào, sống no ấm, yên vui, hạnh phúc ấy thật đẹp, chứa chan tình người.
