The meaning of the five-fruit tray on Tet holiday On the Tet holiday, whether in urban or rural area, being the rich or the poor, almost families also display a five-fruit tray on the ancestral altar, and trying to show the wishes/aspirations of the host beautifully and meaningfully. Though it's called the five-fruits but actually nobody clearly defined what type of fruits they are, depending on the locality with typical climate, the produces and conceptions, people chose different kinds of fruit to display the five-fruit trays. The first is the unripe banana, representing the wood element. The second is a yellow pomelo, representing the earth element, placed in the heart of the banana bunch. Next, three other kinds of fruit that have red colour - symbolizing the fire element such as: chili, ripe orange, pomegranates... White represents the metal element such as: bell-fruit, peach ; black represents the water element such as: purple/black plum, sapodilla plum. On the whole, although there is difference from each region, the five-fruit tray on the ancestral altar is still the place which gathers the spirit of fruit, scent of the tree, Vietnamese national culture and the Vietnamese's wishes: the peace, the security and plenty.

It’s Tet festival in the North. The Tet five-fruit tray plays an irreplaceable role in Vietnamese families. The five-fruit tray is placed next to “chung” cakes and a plate of steamed momordica sticky rice on the ancestral altar. Five kinds of fruit with different colors and shapes create a lively painting.

Banana or finger citron means protection. Pomelo or watermelon with round shape reveals a prosperous and lucky New Year. Persimmon and mandarin orange with impressive colors symbol the success.

The five-fruit tray adds more beautiful colors to the ancestral altar on Tet days. Each part of the country has Tet specialities. For example, Southern people make “tet” cake (similar to “chung” cake in the North) and place watermelon on the ancestral altar.

Boiled chicken and steamed momordica sticky rice indispensable on the offering food tray. It is said that the red color of momordica will bring good luck to every family in the New Year.
