Tiếp tục sau bài thì Quá khứ đơn(Simple Past), hôm nay chúng ta hãy cùng đến với bài Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn (Past Continuous), một thì cũng thường gặp trong tiếng Anh dùng để mô tả một sự việc đang diễn ra tại một thời điểm cụ thể trong quá khứ. Nghe có vẻ giống thì Quá khứ đơn nhưng không phải vậy. Nào, cùng đi vào chi tiết nội dung từng phần nhé!

1) Cách dùng
a. Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn mô tả một hành động đang diễn tiến tại một thời điểm cụ thể trong quá khứ
- Chúng ta thường sử dụng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn với chức năng này nếu có sự xuất hiện của: When, all day, all the morning, at this time + khoảng thời gian,…

Ex: When I left the room, my husband was talking with Sanny
(Khi tôi bước ra khỏi phòng, chồng tôi đang nói chuyện với Sanny) 

When my friend got there, her mom was waiting for her
(Khi bạn tôi bước vào thì mẹ cô ấy đã đợi cô ấy rồi)

At the time of the robbery, he was staying with his wife
(Vào thời điểm của vụ trộm, anh ta đang ở với vợ mình) 

b. Hành động đang diễn tiến liên tục trong một khoảng thời gian nhằm nhấn mạnh tính liên tục của nó
Ex: I was singing all day yesterday
(Tôi đã hát liên tục trong ngày hôm qua)
ð Nếu câu này chỉ có từ “yesterday” thì ta chia thì quá khứ đơn: I singed yesterday.

They were quarelling all the whole time they were together
(Bọn họ cãi nhau suốt trong thời gian chung sống)

I was thinking about him last night
(Tôi đã không ngừng nghĩ về anh ta vào tối hôm qua)

c. Một hành động đang diễn ra trong quá khứ thì có hành động khác xen vào
- Ghi nhớ: Hành động đang diễn ra thì dùng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn, hành động xen vào thì dùng thì quá khứ đơn
Ex: I was walking in the park when I suddenly fell over
(Tôi đang đi bộ trong công viên thì bất ngờ vấp ngã)

They were waiting for the strain when I spoke to them
(Bọn họ đang đợi tàu khi mà tôi nói chuyện với họ)

Annie was talking to me on phone and it suddenly went dead
(Annie đang nói chuyện trên điện thoại với tôi thì bỗng dưng mất tín hiệu)

d. Hai hành động xảy ra đồng thời trong quá khứ
- Ghi nhớ: Chia cả hai hành động ở thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Ex: While I was cooking, Steve was trying to call me
(Trong khi tôi nấu ăn thì Steve đang cố gọi cho tôi)

He was typing while his wife was paiting
(Anh ấy đang đánh máy trong khi cô ấy đang vẽ)

When I was studying Math, my friend was eating out with her parent
(Khi tôi đang học Toán thì bạn tôi đang ra ngoài ăn với bố mẹ)

e. Hành động lặp đi lặp lại trong quá khứ và làm phiền đến người khác
Ex: When he worked here, he was always making noise
(Khi anh ta còn làm việc ở đây, anh ta thường xuyên làm ồn)

My mom was always complaning about my room when she got there
(Mẹ tôi luôn than phiền về phòng tôi khi bà ấy ở đó)

She was always singing all day.
(Cô ta hát suốt ngày)

2) Những dấu hiệu nhận biết thường gặp

- Ngoài việc dựa vào cách dùng của thì Quá khứ tiếp diễn, ngữ cảnh của câu thì các bạn cũng hãy cân nhắc sử dụng thì Quá khứ tiếp diễn khi có xuất hiện các từ như: While (trong khi); When (Khi); at that time (vào thời điểm đó);…
Ex: At that time, I was looking for “Forever” book on the bookstore near my house
(Vào thời điểm đó, tôi đang tìm cuốn sách Forever ở hiệu sách gần nhà)

When she opened the door, her boyfriend was kissing another girl
(Khi cô ấy mở cửa, người yêu của cô đang hôn một cô gái khác)

While they were doing their homework, the teacher was checking the key answer
(Trong khi họ đang làm bài thì cô giáo đang kiểm tra đáp án)


3) Cấu trúc thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

(+) Câu khẳng định:
 

Subject + be(was/were) + Verb-ing + (Object)

Ex: She was discussing with her colleague when I saw her
(Cô ta đang tranh luận với đồng nghiệp khi tôi trông thấy cô ta)

They were trying to shoot someone when I suddenly appeared
(Họ đang cố bắn ai đó khi tôi đột ngột xuất hiện)

It was playing music all day
(Nó đã chơi nhạc cả ngày)

(-) Câu phủ định:
 

Subject + be not(was not/were not/wasn’t/weren’t) + Verb-ing + (Object)

Ex: She wasn’t smiling while you was singing
(Cô ta không có cười trong khi cậu đang hát)

I wasn’t singing while she was studying
(Tôi không có hát trong lúc cô ta đang học)

They weren’t trying to shoot anybody, they were trying to shoot a bird when you suddenly appeared.
(Bọn họ không cố giết ai cả, họ đang cố để bắn một con chim khi cậu đột ngột xuất hiện.)

(?) Câu nghi vấn:
 

(Từ để hỏi) + Be(was/were) + Subject + Verb-ing + (Object)

Ex: Was you singing while she was studying?
(Có phải cậu đã hát trong lúc cô ấy học bài không?)

Where were they talking when you saw them?
(Bọn họ đang nói chuyện ở đâu khi cậu thấy họ?)

What was playing music all day?
(Cái gì đã chơi nhạc cả ngày?)

(!) Câu trả lời ngắn:
 

Yes, I was No, I was not (wasn’t) Yes, you/they/we were No, you/they/we were not (weren’t) Yes, he/she/it was No, he/she/it was not (wasn’t)

4) Đoạn hội thoại ngắn sử dụng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn
Lydn: What was you doing while I was trying to call you?
(Cậu đang làm cái gì trong khi tôi đang cố gọi cậu vậy?)

Sunny: I was cooking in the kitchen while you was calling me. You know. My phone is always in the bedroom. Sorry.
(Tôi đang nấu ăn trong khi cậu gọi cho tôi. Cậu biết mà. Điện thoại của tôi lúc nào cũng để trong phòng ngủ. Xin lỗi nhé.)

Lydn: Oh, don’t mind. I have a travel plan. Do you want to take part in?
(Ôi, không sao. Tôi đang có một kế hoạch du ngoạn. Cậu có muốn tham gia không?)
