Tet, also known as Lunar new year festival, is the biggest traditional festival in Viet Nam. Tet is usually from the end of January to early February. Before Tet, Vietnamese prepare many things for the three main days. They clean their house and decorate with flowers such as kumquat tree or peach blossom. A huge amount of food will be bought before Tet for making traditional dishes. Banh Chung, Banh Tet, Gio cha, Xoi and Mut, …and candies are the foods that must have on Tet holidays. During Tet, people visit their relatives’ homes and give wishes. However, the Vietnamese believe that the first visitor a family receives in the year determines their fortune for the entire year, people never enter any house on the first day without being invited first. Another custom is giving lucky money, which is put into a red envelope as a symbol of luck and wish for a new age. Traditionally, elders will give lucky money to children and the oldest people in the family. However, nowadays, people can give it to anyone including friends, parents, neighbors,… Besides, Vietnamese usually go to pagodas or temples to pray for health, wealth, success,… To Vietnamese, Tet is the happiest time of all year around, members in a family can gather together, which is a meaningful messages of Lunar New year festival. All in all, Tet is all about back to origins, be good to others, enjoy the precious moment, and wish for the best to come.

Tết, còn được gọi là lễ hội Tết Nguyên đán, là lễ hội truyền thống lớn nhất ở Việt Nam. Tết thường là từ cuối tháng Giêng đến đầu tháng Hai. Một phong tục khác là cho tiền lì xì, được đưa vào một phong bì màu đỏ như là một biểu tượng của may mắn và chúc cho một tuổi mới. Theo truyền thống, những người lớn tuổi sẽ cho trẻ em và những người già nhất trong gia đình tiền may mắn. Tuy nhiên, ngày nay mọi người có thể trao nó cho bất cứ ai bao gồm bạn bè, cha mẹ, hàng xóm, ... Bên cạnh đó, người Việt Nam thường đi chùa, đền thờ để cầu nguyện cho sức khoẻ, sự giàu có, thành công, ... Tết cho người Việt Nam là năm hạnh phúc nhất trong năm, các thành viên trong gia đình có thể tập hợp lại với nhau, đó là một thông điệp có ý nghĩa của lễ hội Tết Nguyên đán. Nhìn chung, Tết là về nguồn gốc, tốt cho người khác, tận hưởng khoảnh khắc quý báu, và mong muốn điều tốt nhất để đến.

➢Vietnam is famous for its several holiday and festival, especially Tet holiday. It takes place from the first day of the first month of the lunar calendar until at least the third day. Although occurring in short period of time, it is believed to be the most important and popular holiday in Vietnam. There are many special food are made so as to prepare for Tet meal such as: sticky square cake, Vietnamese sausage, sticky rice and jam. The food is thought to reflect Vietnam’s habit and custom as well as Vietnamese’s lifestyle. Besides, the meal has other dishes like fish, vegetable to show the hope for a successful and prosperous new year. In term of customs, children’s receiving red envelop from the elder, visiting relative’s houses and going to church are popular activities. Giving lucky money is thought to bring children hope and health. Church is the symbol of peace; therefore, individual go there and pray for successive year. Traditionally, the house is designed with peach flower in the North and Ochna integerrima in the south part of Vietnam. Besides, the house as well as town are clear, decorative and beautiful as all are ready to start a new year. People have cozy atmosphere and enjoy joyful time with their family’s members. It’s high time for people living at different parts of country gathering and spending time together. Tet is a chance for one to come back home after many stress and pressure of studying and working environment. Tet is not simply a holiday, it is culture and habit of Vietnamese since its deep meaning is sacred and important. All in all, Tet includes not only joy but also long-standing event in people’s soul as it helps one grow up through experience.
