Rebecca Stevens was the first woman to climb Mount Everest. Before she went up the highest mountain in the world, she was a journalist and lived in south London.

In 1993, Rebecca left her job and her family and travelled to Asia with some other climbers. She found that life on Everest is very difficult. “You must carry everything on your back,” she explained, “so you can only take things that you will need. You can’t wash on the mountain, and in the end I didn’t even take a toothbrush. I am usually a clean person but there is no water, only snow. Water is very heavy so you only take enough to drink!”

Rebecca became famous when she reached the top of Mount Everest on May 17, 1993. After that, she wrote a book about the trip, and people often asked her to talk about it. She got a new job too, on a science programme on television.

The missing ring

Robert's mother was very sad. On Saturday, she lost her favourite ring when the family went for a walk in the forest. Robert's dad went back on Sunday morning to try to find it. He looked everywhere but he couldn't see it because the ring was very little and it was dark under the big trees.

"I'll buy you another sliver ring just like the one you lost," he said to Robert's mum that evening. "But I loved that one!" she answered.

On Monday morning she was still unhappy so Robert said, "Let's go for another walk after school. Perhaps we will finnd your fing if we look again very carefully." "Good idea, Robert," she answered.

So later that afternoon, they drove back to the forest. They enjoyed walking there. They kicked the leaves with their feet and listened to all the birds in the trees.

FAKING IT

Faking It is one of the most popular reality TV shows in Britain – and there’s an American show, too. It’s a very simple idea – – somebody has to learn a new job in four weeks. For example, a punk singer leanred how to be a classical musician, and a computer games tester became a racing driver. The programmes are usually very interesting because the people try really hard – so the audience wants them to be successful. They usually pass the test at the end – but not always.

Sian Evans is a young classical musician. Faking It changed her life. She trained to be a DJ for one of the shows. At first she didn’t really like modern music and she didn’t know anything about it. She was also surprised because it was very difficult. But she worked hard and started to like it. She passed the test – in fact, after four weeks she won a DJ competition – and now she enjoys going to clubs and being a DJ in her free time.

Why is it a successul and popular show? I think it’s because it has a great message – you can do anything is you really want to. It’s one of my favourite TV shows – it makes me happy!

A visit to the Ocean Center – by Rebecca Hardy, aged 13

My family and I went to the Ocean Center in my hometown recently. It was one of the most amazing places I’ve ever been. We don’t live near the sea, so I don’t get much chance to see living creatures for myself. Inside the center you go on what they call an ocean journey. It takes you from the smallest stream, through rivers, and out into the deepest ocean. Along the way you meet fish and other creatures that live in these places. And there are thousands of them – some pretty and peaceful, and others frightening and deadly. Our guide told us that the Center was originally set up to help look after the seas and protect the life within them. In fact, every entry ticket bought there helps the Center to achieve its aim, so I felt my visit was in a good cause. By chance, we arrived just at feeding time and watched staff give food to hundreds of fish. I wanted to do it too, but the staff wouldn’t let me. But I’d still really recommend being there at feeding time. You’ll see feeding times advertised at the ticket sales, or you can telephone in advance to find out when they are. The most fascinating part of the visit for me was a new exhibition at the Center that told the story of seahorses across the world. It has the biggest collection for these magical creatures in Europe, and almost as many as one in the USA. I found out about what they ate, and how a male seahorse managed to give birth to 1500 babies! And although our guide told us it was hard to see the young ones, we were lucky enough to catch sight of some in the tank! We also went to one of the Center’s talks about the underwater world. Ours was called ‘Sharks’, and the one on the following day was called ‘Creatures of the Deep’. There are talks on other topics given on different days, so it’s best to check which talk will take place on the day you go. Once we’d bought our ticket, we could go in and out of the Center as many times as we liked during the day. We can also buy an annual pass that gives you unlimited entry all year around. I’m saving up for one! For questions 1 – 5, circle A, if the sentence is correct, or B, if the sentence is incorrect. For questions 6 – 10, answer the questions. Use your own words. 1.
