Oneday a few years ago, I entered a small room and sat quietly, looking through the window, waiting.Time was running by fast, but my excitement did not let me be aware of it. After five, ten, fifteen minutes passed and no one came in, my impatience reached a peak. However, nothing went wrong; it was only that I had arrived earlier that I was supposed to. At last, I heard steps; the door opened agentleman came in. Looking at me and smiling he greeted me affably.

I didn't respond to his greeting: I simply stared at him and smiled foolishly. Gesticulating expressively, the man continued speaking.I understood not one word that he said.Nevertheless, he went on for 45 mminutes. Finally stopped he bowed and left the room.

The next day I was in the small room again, but that time I was able answer the man's greeting when he appeared. The day before, you see, was my first English lesson.

Exercise 31.

Tom Smith has musical talent, but he is a very lazy boy. He always gets up late, and he is seldom on time for school. When he knows that he has to work hard in school on a certain day, he stays home.

If Tom were wise, he wouldn't try so hard to awoid all the problems of his youth. He often says  that he wishes he were born rich, or he complains that if his great-grandfather hadn't been unlucky, his family would be rich now. The boy sometimes says that if he had any substantial help from anyone, he already be a great musician.

Among his friends there are two or three who appreciate Tom's ability, but they think that he lacks preserverance. If he had it , they would help him.
