Có 4 cách sử dụng chính của thì quá khứ tiếp diễn như dưới đây:

1. Nhấn mạnh diễn biến, quá trình của sự vật, sự việc hay thời gian sự vật, sự việc đó diễn ra

At 10 a.m yesterday, she was watching TV. (Vào lúc 10h sáng, cô ấy đang xem TV)

She was cooking at 7 p.m yesterday. (Cô ấy đang nấu ăn lúc 7h tối hôm qua.)

We were having final test at this time three weeks ago. (Chúng tôi đang làm bài kiểm tra cuối kỳ tại thời điểm này 3 tuần trước.)

2. Diễn tả hành động đang xảy ra tại 1 thời điểm trong quá khứ

While he was taking a bath, she was using the computer (Trong khi anh ấy đang tắm thì cô ấy dùng máy tính.)

She was singing while I was playing game. (Cô ấy đang hát trong khi tôi đang chơi game.)

She was writing a letter while we were watching TV. (Cô ấy đang viết thư trong khi chúng tôi đang xem phim.)

 3. Diễn tả hành động đang xảy ra thì có hành động khác xen vào

He was walking in the street when he suddenly fell over. (Khi anh ấy đang đi trên đường thì bỗng nhiên anh ấy bị vấp ngã.)

We met Minh when we were going shopping yesterday. (Chúng tôi tình cờ gặp Minh khi đang đi mua sắm vào hôm qua.)

The light went out when I was washing my clothes. (Điện mất khi tôi đang giặt quần áo.)4. Hành động lặp đi lặp lại trong quá khứ đồng thời làm phiền đến người khác

My dad was always complaining about my room when he got there. (Bố tôi luôn than phiền về phòng tôi khi ông ấy ở đó).

He was always making mistakes even in easy assignments. (Anh ta luôn mắc lỗi thậm chí ngay cả trong những nhiệm vụ đơn giản.)

He was always forgetting his girlfriend’s birthday. (Anh ta luôn quên ngày sinh nhật của bạn gái.)

4. Một số dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn sẽ rất dễ nhầm lẫn cũng như khó để dùng sao cho chính xác, 

1. Trong câu có chứa các trạng từ chỉ thời gian cùng thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ:

– At + giờ chính xác + thời gian trong quá khứ

I was studying English at 10 pm last night (Tôi đang học tiếng Anh lúc 10h tối hôm qua)

We were watching TV at 12 o’clock last night. (Chúng tôi đang xem tivi vào lúc 12 giờ đêm qua.)

– In + năm xác định

In 2015, he was living in England (Vào năm 2015, anh ấy đang sống tại Anh)

In 2019, I was working at K.M company (Vào năm 2019, tôi đang làm việc ở công ty K.M)

/spr/:spring,sprint,spread,spree,sprang,sprite,sprout,sprain,etc

/str/:street,stress,strict,strain,straight,strong,strew,etc
